Studentship available: PhD in Applied Linguistics, Corpus Linguistics, Computational Linguistics or Natural Language Processing (Welsh language desirable) Applications are invited for a PhD studentship as part of an inter-disciplinary and multi-institutional project that is creating a large-scale, open-source corpus of contemporary Welsh language (CorCenCC).

Computational linguistics is an interdisciplinary field applying computational tools and techniques to the scientific study of language, as well as the engineering of useful language technologies such as question answering and machine translation.

Founded in 1998, by Professor Ruslan Mitkov, RGCL is a growing and world-leading inter-disciplinary research group which specialises in various areas of Computational Linguistics and Natural Language Processing which include but are not limited to anaphora resolution, automatic summarisation, machine translation, translation memory systems and translation technology in general, term extraction.

The Department of Linguistics at the University of Washington offers programs of study for graduate students leading to the degree of Ph.D. in Linguistics, with emphasis in General Linguistics or Computational Linguistics. Prospective applicants should see the Prospective Students section.

The CLASIC program provides a solid foundation in both computer science and linguistics graduate coursework, as well as several courses focused on data-driven linguistics, computational linguistics, and information processing.

Computational linguistics is an interdisciplinary field that addresses the use of computers to process or produce human language. Linguistics contributes to this field an understanding of the special properties of language data, and also provides theories and descriptions of language structure and use.

The Linguistics Ph.D. program begins in the Fall semester, which starts in late August (See the academic calendar). There is no provision for students to begin in the Spring semester. The School of Arts and Sciences allows candidates to defer admission for up to one year.
